Holy Eucharist

Sunday worship is centered around the Eucharist, a word meaning "thanksgiving." The order of worship for Holy Eucharist is twofold: we listen and respond to the Holy Scriptures, and we celebrate Holy Communion.

Twenty Second Sunday after Trinity

Collect of the Day

Almighty and everlasting God, you govern all things both in heaven and on earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and in our time grant us your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Lessons Isaiah 59:9-20; Psalm 13; Hebrews 5:11-6:12; Mark 10:46-52

Born and raised around Columbia, SC, Brodie Porterfield connected with song at a young age. The guitar sound, vocal delivery and lyrical imagery within his original compositions reflect the folk rock sounds he grew up with. His themes and atmosphere paint the landscape of his stomping grounds, and tell the story of his individual search for meaning.

Over his 20 year creative journey, Brodie has opened for many notable musicians including Lucy Kaplansky, John Gorka, Over the Rhine, Johnny A, Roy Book Binder, and Corey Harris.

He is currently performing songs spanning his life including works from 2013’s Phantom Skyline and numerous songs slated for his next release.

Brodie Porterfield will be joined by...

Old time sorrow tinged with soulful melodies, southern gothic-like lyrics, and the occasional upbeat toe-tapper with the ruckus of kazoo describe the music of singer-songwriter Kelley McLachlan. She is one of the front women for bands such as The Post-Timey String Band and Boomtown Waifs (formerly Prairie Willows) allowing her to vary in genres from folk to blues and from old-time to hip hop and soul songs coated in bluegrass.

Greg holds degrees in Chinese literature, and can play great soul guitar.

Parker’s Back is an acoustic Americana quartet that plays everything from traditional folk, old time, and bluegrass to gospel to vintage country to alt-country to rockabilly to blues to early 20th century jazz, swing, and popular music. The band members are all long time veterans of the Columbia music scene and are all members of other popular gigging bands. Parker’s Back was created out of a desire to bring all the subgenres of Americana music together. The band’s name come from a Flannery O’Connor story.

Robbie Grice on guitar and lead vocals is also guitarist and lead vocalist for Flat Out Strangers. He previously performed with The Losers and Rockabilly 88 and has recorded and published songs on British rockabilly labels Nervous and Fury and on local/regional compilations. The State newspaper once called him a local legend; that was a stretch.

Kristen Harris on fiddle and vocals plays with Flat Out Strangers, The Boomtown Waifs, and the Asheville-based national touring act Resonant Rogues. She previously was in the acclaimed trio The Prairie Willows. She is also the 2013 SC Fiddling Champion and is very much in demand as one of the best damn fiddlers in the South.

Dave Holder on bass and vocals plays with Randy Lucas Trio, Columbia Bluegrass Society, Soda City String Band, and Hobart Trotter Project, and many others. He is adept in all genres from Bluegrass to Jazz to classical music. He also grows great kale.

Larry Klein is the 2004 winner of Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award and is on dobro and vocals with Willie Wells (previously Bill Wells) and The Blue Ridge Mountain Grass, The Carolina Ramblers, Palmetto Blue, The Amicks, and previously played with the true local legends Snuffy Jenkins, Pappy Sherrill and The Hired Hands. Klein is hands-down the best resophonic guitar player in the state.

Klein and Grice hosted the popular SCETV Vintage Americana Radio show Guitars, Cadillacs, and Hillbilly Music for many years and were voted Free Times editors picks for Best Local Radio Personalities. Klein was also the long-time host of the influential The Bluegrass Sound on the same network.

Band members have played shows with The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dwight Yoakam, Bill Haley’s Comets, Johnny Gimble of Bob Wills’ Texas Playboys and his protege Randy Elmore, Unknown Hinson, The SubDudes, Mark W. Winchester of Emmylou Harris's Nash Ramblers and The Brian Setzer Orchestra, David Crowe of the Osborne Brothers, Danielle Howle, Drink Small, Skipp Pearson, Ultra Faux, Dick Goodwin’s Big Band, Prettier Than Matt, SC Dobro great Clarence Jackson, and many others.
